Virgin Megastore in Times Square is to close in April after the company decided not to renew its lease.
Virgin Megastores have been quickly vacating in the United States with another landmark store in West Hollywood also now gone. The Times Square Virgin Megastore was the largest store for the chain in America. It took up three floors of New York’s most expensive real estate.
The store was not just a music store but also stocked books, computer games, DVD and merch. Music was only a small part of what the store sold.
The chain was purchased from Richard Branson by the Related Companies and Vornado Realty Trust in 2007. Of the 11 stores, the company bought, 6 have now closed.
The Virgin Megastore at Union Square will remain open for now.
The Times Square store will become a cut priced clothing store from April.
