A Scottish politician wants to claim ownership of AC/DC.
Christine Grahame, a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP), says that despite their Australian origins, as AC/DC, Malcolm and Angus Young and Bon Scott, as well as Brian Johnson, are Scottish born.In a statement to parliament, Ms Grahame argues, “"It is clear Scott had a strong sense of his identity, from the 'Scotland forever' tattoo he had on his arm to his playing the bagpipes on the AC/DC track It's a long way to the top”.
"When they played Glasgow in 1978 the whole band wore the Scotland national football strip as their concert took place just ahead of the World Cup finals and it would be fitting if they were to do the same when the band play Hampden national football stadium next June”.
"After 35 years AC/DC are still contributing to music and giving fans enjoyment worldwide”.
"I think they have long deserved official recognition from their homeland for that major musical contribution and my parliamentary motion will go some way towards recognizing that."
Bon Scott has a plaque in his owner in his birthplace of Kirriemuir. He is buried in Fremantle, Western Australia.
Ms Grahame wants the town of Holyrood to recognize the Scottish roots of the band.
Her motion was officially tabled in the Scottish Parliament.
Meanwhile, back in Australia, the first AC/DC singer Dave Evans is calling for Sydney to be officially recognized as the place where it all began for AC/DC.
Evans says the perception is that AC/DC started out in Melbourne, which is false.
AC/DC formed in Sydney in 1973. Evans was lead singer for one-year before being ousted for Bon.
AC/DC were based in Melbourne for many years. The classic clip ‘It's a Long Way To The Top’ was filmed in Swanston Street. The Rosie in ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’ was a St Kilda resident. And let us not forget Bon had a son Ben in Melbourne. Ben is now 35 year-old.
However, a 16-year old Paul Cashmere can vouch for AC/DC seeing a Sydney band. AC/DC (with Evans) played at one of my school dances in 1974. At the time, they had just released their first ever single ‘Can I Sit Next To You Girl’.
