The video demonstrating the comparison between Coldplay`s `Viva La Vida` and Joe Satriani`s ‘If I Could Fly` has been taken off YouTube.
Reports claim EMI, Coldplay’s music label, is behind the removal of the clip.Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for plagiarism over the song. He claims that ‘Viva La Vida’ is identical to his ‘If I Could Fly’.
When the two tracks were on YouTube and played back to back, even the most loyal Coldplay fan would have had a hard time arguing that Chris Martin was not a very naughty boy.
Martin has since issued a statement to say that he did not rip-off Satriani’s song. “With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations,” the December 9 statement read. “If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence on the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavors”.
Satriani told Music Radar that he became aware of the situation the moment the Coldplay song was released. "Almost immediately, from the minute their song came out, my e-mail box flooded with people going, 'Have you heard this song by Coldplay? They ripped you off man.' I mean, I couldn't tell you how many e-mails I received,” he said.
"I felt like a dagger went right through my heart,” he told Music Radar’s Joe Bosso.
The Satriani Coldplay case will be the one to watch in ’09. That is, of course, if Chris Martin doesn’t make it easy on everyone and just give Joe a credit on the song.
