Bones Hillman, the former bass player for Midnight Oil, is thugging harmony with Counting Crows drummer Steve Bowman and Aussie producer Mark Moffatt. The former Midnight Oil bass player has a new band called Sons of Sound.
We will soon be hearing the work of Sons of Sound, in fact, right now if you want to. The track ‘Love Always Keeps Her Name’ has been posted at the Sons of Sound MySpace site.So what do they sound like?
Here is the band’s bio:
The power of Midnight Oil’s rhythm section is legendary, as is the unique groove of the original Counting Crows line up.
Oil’s Bassist Bones Hillman , Counting Crows drummer Steve Bowman have teamed with veteran Australian expat producer/ guitarist Mark Moffatt to form Sons of Sound, a team style recording rhythm section based in Nashville.
Many recording artists around the world have very little idea of the depth Nashville holds as a recording and music resource centre regardless of genre This global group of musicians have banded together to put that misperception right and hopefully attract solo artists/writers from around the world to Music City.
Mark Moffatt "I’ve worked in every major recording centre in the world, and none compare to Nashville. I can’t stress enough that the real jewels lie below the surface and many international artists and industry people could benefit by experiencing the amazing creativity and ease of working this town has to offer.
Bones Hillman " We have been making records for a long time, some on big budgets and some on a shoe string. For me its not about how many channels are on a mixing board or the size of a mans hard drive. Some of my favorite albums have been made on an 8-track machine. It’s all about respect of the music and each other as players. Its great to be part of a team again "
Steve Bowman " Recording with Mark and Bones is always so easy. We have a good blend of musical influences and ideas and it makes for a comfortable environment. Good vibes in the studio effect the music when it gets to tape. You can hear it in the playbacks"
In a posting at the MySpace site, Mark explains the origins of the band. “This whole thing started while we were recording with my mate Hugh Murray, an Aussie artist who has made regular working visits to Nashville since living here 'round '97,” he says.
“Bones, Steve and myself had been having a ball jamming regularly for a few months, and they both came to a gig I did with Hughie at 12th & Porter, and dug it. Up to that point, Hughie had kinda focused on quantity getting as many songs rehearsed for a live show as we could, which to me never really let his tunes breath and find their own individual character & atmosphere”.
“Eric Fritch had played keys on those early shows, and had completed his " Eastland Studio" in East Nashville. Hughie got talking with us all about recording and we assembled at Eric's studio which is open plan style with no control room, a lay out that worked great for the job in hand ... getting Hughie's songs down with absolutely the right feel and vibe”.
“Anyways here we are trying to have even more fun, so please leave a message if you want to talk a bit more about recording in this mode, no matter what continent you live on”.
