John Peel Gets A Rock and Roll Train

British media legend, the late, great John Peel has a rock and roll train named in his honor.

The train will have its official launch on Thursday at the Liverpool South Parkway station.

One of Peel’s favourite songs was ‘Does This Train Stop On Merseyside’. Liverpool band Amsterdam will perform the song in his honor at the launch.

Peel’s wife Sheila Ravenscroft will be at the ceremony.

John Robert Parker Ravenscroft was born on August 30, 1939. Professionally, he was known as John Peel and was one of Britian’s most innovative broadcasters.

Peel was one of the early presenters on the BBC. His music tastes and broadcasts became endorsements for new music.

He was the first to play Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells in its entirety. His program The Peel Sessions featured live performances from AC/DC (1976), REM (1998), Madness (1979), Joy Division (1979) and Pink Floyd (1967, 68, 69, 70 and 71).

John Peel died on October 25, 2004.
