On the eve of the 2008 edition of Popkomm, Berlin - a city famed for its artistic heritage - will present 83 dead heads around the city... and we’re not talking about Grateful Dead fans.
Painter Andreas Ole Ohlendorff will show off some his paintings in room 11.3 at Messe Berlin during Popkomm. His works show images of dead artists ranging from Kurt Cobain to Elvis Presley to Johnny Cash.Of course with 83 artworks, it’s not all obvious choices. He also shows Dutch artist Herman Brood, who committed suicide by jumping of the Amsterdam Hilton (as Frank Black - who’s last album was a collection of Brood-written songs - said in Melbourne last week, Brood “reclaimed the Amsterdam Hilton from John and Yoko”)
He also has painted artists from his native Germany, including singer-songwriter Gerulf Pannach and Can guitarist Michael Karoli.
Ohlendorff - a former policeman - said of his paintings, “My paintings create a link between music, an attitude to life, impermanence and the classic portrait.”
Those heading down to Popkomm from tomorrow can view his works in room 11.3 at Messe Berlin, the convention centre.
Undercover will be bringing you the best of Popkomm over the next three days.
