The Big Day Out 2009 has revealed it’s first batch of musical entertainment for it’s annual jaunt around the country (and New Zealand).
As Undercover has previously reported, Neil Young will be headlining and it comes as no surprise to see My Morning Jacket on the bill as well, since they’re supporting Young on his sideshows in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.Other additions include TV on the Radio, The Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy (seriously, did anyone see that coming?) and The Ting Tings.
The boiler room is filled with plenty of pleasantries, such as Simian Mobile Disco, Cut Copy, Pendulum and presumably Sneaky Sound System.
Beyond that, there is a bunch of obvious, but enjoyable Australian bands like The Living End (seriously, did anyone not see that coming?), The Grates, Cog and Youth Group, as well as a healthy dose of less expected Aussie bands like Eddy Current Suppression Ring and Birds of Tokyo.
The bill has gone from the safe and obvious to the legendary to the risky to the old favourites, but it is lacking in anything really “now” and harks back to the line ups of the 90s when the festival had a reputation for getting bands between or just before albums... then again, bands back in the good ol’ days usually had fans that stuck with them for more than one album.
That said, there is plenty to get excited about. I mean, NEIL YOUNG! How will he do it? Either a three hour headlining spot, or Lees and West will wet their pants when Young is still playing at 1am, caring little for curfew laws as he is wont to do.
The full lineup is:
Neil Young, Arctic Monkeys, The Living End, The Prodigy, Sneaky Sound System, My Morning Jacket, Pendulum, Bullet for my Valentine, TV on the Radio, Simian Mobile Disco, The Ting Tings, Tiki Taane, Cut Copy, Cog, Youth Group, The Grates, Birds of Tokyo, TZU and Eddy Current Suppression Ring.
