Timbaland may drive an Australian promoter out of business even though he didn’t turn up for a tour.
The American producer and urban star double-booked himself in both Australia and Europe in what looked suspiciously like waiting for the better deal.Timbaland claims Showtime Touring Group breached their obligations although Undercover stories can date-stamp Timbaland’s conflict-of-interests as they were happening.
Undercover was contacted by a source involved in the European tour to alert us to the fact that our Australian Timbaland dates had to be wrong because they overlapped with their European dates.
This was news at the Australian end, with a spokesperson for the promoter confirming that the published dates were accurate and going ahead.
Tickets had to remain on sale for the Aussie tour because Timbaland had not officially cancelled the shows.
The conflict-of-interests put the Australian promoter in a predicament as the news of the conflict made fans cautious about buying tickets.
The Australian promoter was left in a situation that if they announced the tour was cancelled without Timbaland’s authority, that Timbaland would be in a position to be sue them for breach of contract.
The will it or won’t it mystery remained right up to the point when Timbaland was due to land in Australia. He didn’t. Then it was apparent that the tour was not happening.
In not giving notice to the cancelled tour until days before, many Timbaland fans were unaware that the show wasn’t happening and turned up for the gigs.
Undercover talked to the publicist for the support act two days before the show was due to start only to be told that they had not been notified that it wasn’t happening.
Timbaland’s aggressive legal actions against a promoter he failed to turn up for while he had double-booked himself in another territory seems like one of those ridiculous legal battles were the rich guy gets to beat up the guy who can’t afford the big lawyer.
Timbaland claims his reputation has been damaged? Wow, maybe he should sue himself for that one.
