John Mellencamp and his wife Elaine have responded to self-appointed music critic Bob Lefsetz`s immature outburst about John`s latest album cover.
Proving that old saying that “empty vessels make the most sound”, Lefsetz criticized Mellencamp’s latest album, not because of the music, but because he thought John looked too young on the cover.“Act your age. Unless you think you're really gonna get Top Forty airplay and the little kids will understand,” the bald, fat critic moaned. “You want to be PART of your audience, not miles away. He also slammed Mellencamp for utilizing one of the remaining revenue streams still available to an artist, a TV commercial. “If your career is based on credibility, and Mellencamp's was, don't do a commercial. It undercuts your cred,” he gripped.
Mellencamp wasn’t amused and had the guts to fight back. “I thought that you were a fan of music. Seems that a man of your age would have learned not to judge a book by the cover. Listen to the music, it shows every line and every scar”, he wrote.
“You choose to sit behind your computer and have the illusion that you have an answer....leave your house sometime and get in the real world, the world of struggle, survival and longevity. Nothing is as it seems”.
Then Mellencamp’s wife Elaine weighed in on the argument. “I guess that you have become the proverbial cranky old man, hurling insults at the people who are out trying to live while you just sit and criticize,” she said.
Bob Lefsetz has become a legend in his own lunch-time with thanks to the Internet and his biting blog. Although his days are devoured criticizing every aspect of the music industry (and that now includes what artist looks like), he has never offered any real solutions.
