Primal Scream`s ninth album `Beautiful Future` has finally landed on our desks in all its beloved glory and it is every bit the album we had hoped it would be.
However, as previously reported, despite being a small blip on this ball-tearing ten tracker, is it possible to get past the undeniable similarities between the rock ‘n’ soul jam of ‘Zombie Man’ and Ringo Starr’s infectious ‘Back Off Boogaloo’ from 1972.There is no credit and no mention of the Ringo song anywhere in the booklet.
You can make your own mind up when you get a copy of this album, and let’s face it, as a music lover, you’re going to want to own this.
Despite wearing its influence so boldly on its sleeve, ‘Zombie Man’ also happens to be a great return to the ‘Rocks’ era Scream with songs like ‘Beautiful Summer’ and ‘Uptown’ adding an almost Curtis Mayfield groove to their more dreamy sounds.
‘I Love To Hurt (You Love To Be Hurt)’ leans more towards the bands later sounds like ‘Xtrmntr’ and ‘Evil Heat’ but it’s quickly contrasted by the country influenced ‘Over & Over’.
Hell, the opening track ‘Beautiful Future’ even features tubular bells! How cool is that' When - apart from that masterpiece (there, I said it) by Mike Oldfield - have you heard a contemporary band use tubular bells in their records' And to such great effect!
Yep, this is a corker of an album. Primal Scream fans will love it - I know this, because I am one. And from a band that has never been afraid to wear their influences so proudly on their sleeves, I’m sure fans will turn a blind eye to this Zombie Boogaloo, but phew, it really does sound similar, right'
