Patti Smith and My Bloody Valentine front man Kevin Shields teamed up in 2005 and 2006 to perform a couple of shows and finally those recordings are getting an official release.
The performance, entitled ‘The Coral Sea’ is a posthumous tribute to Smith’s friend, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. It is largely a spoken word performance with Shields’ guitar providing the backdrop for Smith’s powerful words. The album was recorded on June 22nd 2005 and September 12th 2006, both shows being sold-out performances at the QEH in London.
‘The Coral Sea’ is out on August 18 through Smith and Shields’ imprint Pask, which is through Inertia in Australia.
There is no word as to whether the duo are going to reunite and play together again.
Patti Smith will be heading to Australia later this year as part of the Melbourne International Arts Festival. She will also play a show at the Sydney Opera House.
