Singer songwriter Alan O`Day wrote `Undercover Angel`, `Skinny Girls`, Angie Baby` and `Rock and Roll Heaven`, but despite having made hits all over the world, he still remembers that horrible experience as a songwriter when you are told your song sucks.
O`Day has drawn on his early, personal experiences and written a song about that very topic.`Your Song Sucks` will feature on his forthcoming album `I Hear Voices`.
The song “describes a scenario that is repeated often in the world of aspiring songwriters,” he tells Undercover News. “With little experience and high hopes, they write a song that, to them, is absolutely perfect. Convinced that this is their ticket to the big time, they rush to find a recording studio, where they spend lots of bucks to create a big production "demo" of their masterpiece. They`re so inspired by their own work that it didn`t occur to them to play the song for someone with "professional ears" first, before emptying their wallet. Or they don`t know where to find such a person”.
“Anyway, when their song is finally mixed and burned on a CD, Then they set about trying to find a producer, publisher, or record company executive who will hear the song and sign them up immediately. But of course it doesn`t happen that way. Our fledgling writer bumps into cold reality, hence the title”.
The good news is that in the song, at least, it doesn`t all turn out bad. “I gave the song a happy, though unexpected, ending,” he says. “The track is a live recording at a club in Nashville filled with songwriters, and from the response, you can tell they empathize.”
As a songwriter for more than 30 years, Alan has this piece of advice. “Learning is painful sometimes,” he says.
`I Hear Voices` will be Alan`s first album in 28 years. It will be released later this year.
