It was a massive week for Max Merritt last week. He was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and he oversaw the release of The Concert for Max, a glowing tribute from the Australian music industry to help with his medical bills.
67-year old Merritt has been suffering from Goodpasture’s syndrome, a rare autoimmune disease. He told Undercover, “I’m feeling pretty good at the moment. The whole last year was pretty horrible. I am in good shape now. I do dialysis three days a week. If it wasn’t for the dialysis I’d be normal. It’s just an inconvenience”.Last week, he became a Hall of Famer. “It was marvellous. It is something that we all get one day but don’t pin our hopes on it too much because there is a good chance it will never happen. But I’m glad it did and I’m very proud of it”.
Merritt is best known for the song ‘Slipping Away’. “It has been very good to me. It is the song that keeps on giving,” he said.
And this week sees the release of The Concert for Max, a DVD from his tribute concert. “Its fabulous,” he says. “There are so many artists on there that I have admired for so long and they really rose to the occasion on the night of the concert. There were some fantastic performances from Ross Wilson, Renee (Geyer), Normie (Rowe). It is just overwhelming when I watch it”.
