MTV's 24-hour college network MTVu announces the nominees for their Woodie Awards.
Fresh off the back on the MTV Video Music Awards, MTVu come along with even more underground cred announcing the nominees for their Woodie Awards. In its third year, The Woodie Awards have previously featured The Killers, Fall Out Boy and Matisyahu as winners, prior to their broader mainstream success.For those interested in what US college students think is the Next Big Thing, it looks mostly English, with revived UK singer songwriter Imogen Heap and UK download stars Arctic Monkeys leading the pack. They scored three nominations each, competing in the Breaking Woodie category (for best emerging artist) and Streaming Woodie category (for most downloaded).
Artists to score two nominations included Atmosphere, Gym Class Heroes, Hellogoodbye, Nightmare of You, Plain White T's, Taking Back Sunday, The Academy Is and The Fray. To demonstrate how ahead of their time the Woodies are, their Alumni Award will be battled out by Ghostface Killah, AFI, Muse, Fiona Apple and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
College student voting happens online and via mobile phone with the winners announced at a live concert event in New York on October 25.
