Nick Cave Doing Another Grinderman

Fri, 20 Jun 2008 05:44:27 +1000

Speaking exclusively to Xfm, Bad Seed Nick Cave has revealed that his Grinderman side project is to record a new album after their upcoming festival tour.

Having only just completed a tour with The Bad Seeds in support of their 14th studio album, 'Dig!!! Lazarus, Dig!!!', Nick Cave is already planning the follow-up to Grinderman's eponymous debut.

"There's a lot of work around the Grinderman project that we wanna do in a more serious way this time," explained Cave. "The thing about Grinderman was that we just threw out the [debut] record and we made it very quickly. We wondered about it's affect on us and it was hugely important on The Bad Seeds."

Did this mean that whatever Grinderman does will have an effect on The Bad Seeds and vice-versa?

"You can't help that," Cave replied. "It may be a problem, it may not, it's difficult to say. When we go in to make the next Grinderman record we don't want it to sound like the last Bad Seeds record or the Grinderman record before and we're forced to find something new. But that's always been the way!"

Cave remains adamant that whatever happens, the artistic freedom enjoyed by Cave with the Grinderman project won't be compromised.

"The thing that Grinderman will remain committed to is that it doesn't matter; if the whole thing goes belly-up and if people really hate it then we don't care because we have the Bad Seeds anyway so that gives us an enormous amount of freedom to go and spend three months in Bulgaria or something."

Cave confirmed that he views Grinderman's upcoming festival tour as a means of getting in the right frame of mind for the band's autumn recording sessions:

"We're going out in a playing mode so we can get in the mood for making the new record, that's why we're doing the live stuff."

Grinderman's second album is tentatively planned for release in early 2009.
