Mercury Prizewinners Arctic Monkeys' sales skyrocket as the band talk of a second album.
The UK's likeliest lads have been celebrating the Mercury Prize win for their debut album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'. The band donated their £20,000 prize money to charity but are still managing to rake in more cash for the win; within the week, sales for the album in the UK almost doubled, up 98% from the previous week. The album has also recently gone platinum in Australia.Of course, now all we need is a follow-up. The band have obliged by announcing they're working on their second album. Gigwise reports that the band have started rehearsing new material, with drummer Matt Helder saying, "We can't wait to get on with recording them. There's no pressure on us, no worries about that. We just can't wait to get going properly on them."
Frontman Alex Turner was typically brief and oblique when talking about the emerging style of the new tunes, "We have learned a lot as musicians, but we haven't started taking cocaine or owt like that. We could say 'we've moved on' but every band thinks that."
