It was Hollywood's worst kept secret. Jimmy Fallon to host Late Night.
Fallon has been officially announced as the new host of Late Night, replacing Conan O'Brien. O'Brien will move to Los Angeles to replace Jay Leno on the Tonight Show. Leno announced his retirement in 2004.Undercover had the Fallon story on April 26.
The leak caught NBC off guard. They had always planned on making the announcement on May 12.
Conan will be the fifth host of The Tonight Show. The show first aired in 1954 with host Steve Allen.
Jack Paar took over the show in 1957 and stayed until 1962.
Johnny Carson made the show his in 1962 and stayed in the chair for the next 30 years.
Jay Leno replaced Johnny Carson in 1992 and will step down in 2009 for Conan.
