So it goes like this ... Jimmy Fallon will be the new Conan O'Brien when Conan O'Brien becomes the new Jay Leno after Leno vacates his chair after 20 years as the new Johnny Carson.
Leno gave four years notice back in 2004 that he would be retiring at the end of the 2008 season. The Fallon leak has caught NBC off guard. The network was planning to announce the appointment on May 12.
Fallon comes to Late Night via Saturday Night Live. It is a fitting tribute to the show, after SNL's Conan also went from the show to Late Night back in 1993.
Fallon had an apprenticeship for the variety show when David Letterman gave him a fill-in gig in 2003.
The new line-up is expected to start in January.
