Nerina Pallot has been promised the world, signed her life away, sold next to nothing and disappeared from sight for five years, doomed to a life of obscurity.
"Well I'd love to say that I spent my days lying on a lino on a pool in the Carribean... maybe I should say that actually, that's more interesting... no my first record came out to only three countries, England, Australia and France," she told Undercover, "and Australia was responsible for buying 40 copies, and maybe France another 40 and England another 40. So I gave up music for a bit then I went back to University to study English. I don't know, I guess I just kind of chucked it in for a while."That is until she decided to give the music business another shot.
"When I went back to university I was studying English and I was inspired by words. I just missed music and I started working with a few producers and they insisted that I keep going and they helped me make a record for next to no money. As it progressed I thought I'd give it another shot, but I'm going to give it a shot on my own terms this time and the album sold tons more than it ever did on a major label."
That second shot was her much more successful and much more personal album 'Fires', which included a number of singles picked up by BBC Radio 2 in the U.K. and 'Fires' became record of the week.
She was picked up by Warner Music and she has done it on her own terms.
We at Undercover think it's great when an artist can truly call an album their own, so see if you like her by searching for her video 'We've All Gone To War' on Undercover, then check out her album 'Fires'.
