Rapper Mos Def was arrested last Thursday evening for performing outside the MTV Video Music Awards in New York.
Mos Def - whose momma knows him as Dante Smith - was performing a memorial song for the Hurricane Katrina victims when he was arrested outside Radio City Music Hall. He was taken into custody, and released Friday morning, reports said.He has reportedly been given a summons for "operating a sound reproduction device without a permit". A spokeswoman for Mos Def said defiantly, "Mos Def did not set out to get arrested or break laws, his only intention was to remind people that after one year the people hardest hit by Katrina still need the support of all Americans."
Mos Def has been at the forefront of socially conscious hip-hop ever since his debut in 1998 in the group Black Star, a collaboration with Talib Kweli. As an actor, he has appeared in 'Monster's Ball', 'Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy' and 'The Italian Job'.
