Although it was a star-studded night at MTV's Video Music Awards, the underdogs came out on top.
It was a big night for the many variants of emo, being included across the board. Goth screamo stalwarts AFI managed to win a Best Rock Video Moonman statuette for 'Miss Murder'. Oddly, the song beat out disco-emo fashion plates Panic! At The Disco's 'I Write Sins Not Tragedies' in that category, but Panic's tune won Video Of The Year.Emo pop rockers All-American Rejects won Best Group Video, Viewer's Choice went to emo rockers Fall Out Boy, and proto-cock rock youngsters Avenged Sevenfold won Best New Artist.
Unsurprisingly, it was also a big night for rap and R&B but with some surprises. Chamillionaire beat out 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes for Best Rap Video. Black Eyed Peas somehow ousted Common, Kanye West and Three 6 Mafia for Best Hip Hop Video. Gnarls Barkly's 'Crazy' scored best Direction and Editing nods.
And despite being nominated in three categories, Kanye West's smash hit 'Gold Digger' missed out altogether.
