Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is set to have a hit song.
The Apology speech delivered by the P.M. will be the basis of the new version of Paul Kelly's 'From Little Things Big Things Grow'.The GetUp StandUp version of the song is being released today by the GetUp Mob.
Members of The GetUp Mob include Paul Kelly and Missy Higgins as well as Kev Carmody and Urthboy.
As well as the Apology speech to the stolen generation by Prime Minister Rudd, former Prime Minister Paul Keating's Redfern speech is also featured on the track.
"This contemporised version of the song transforms us from a negative concept of the past to the positive possibilities of the future," said Kev Carmody in a statement.
"Music is a vehicle for social change and this song will carry us all on that road," said Tim Levinson (Urthboy).
"From Little Things Big Things Grow has its roots in songs like Woody Guthrie's Deportees and The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll by Bob Dylan. And those songs grew out of the soil of other older songs. The Get Up Mob just added another branch to the tree. Long may it fruit," said Paul Kelly.
The origins of the song started after the artists witnessed the number of Australian's who went to Parliament House in Canberra to listen to Mr. Rudd's historic speech.
The song was created to document the apology. "When Prime Minister Rudd said the words "I am sorry" a wave of emotion and a process of healing began across the nation. The apology to the Stolen Generations marked a historic moment in our history and the first step on the road to a reconciled Australia," said GetUp Executive Director Brett Solomon.
All proceeds from the song will go to the GetUp's Reconciliation Fund.
The song is only available as a digital download.
