REM singer Michael Stipe has "shocked" the world. He has announced that his fellow REM members Peter Buck and Mike Mills are straight.
Stipe decided to take the piss out of a UK news agency that thought it uncovered a scoop when they announced last week that he was gay. Stipe has been open about his sexuality for years. In the video announcement placed on YouTube, Stipe says, "REM's Mike Mills and Peter Buck today announced that after years of awkward speculation are heterosexual, or straight. I am happy for my band-mates and congratulate their candidness and their courage at making this bold statement. I stand beside them as always and stand beside them during this difficult but liberating decision to come forward. I can say on their behalf that they are relived to finally acknowledge their real selves publicly. Mike Mills said, and I quote, "it was time to step out of the fog of uncertainty and into the light of light".
Stipe had been open about his sexuality to family and friends, including the band, since the 1980s.
