How does that old saying go? "You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time". Timbaland has got to be kidding if he thinks we are prepared to swallow this complete bullshit about "the first mobile phone album".
The spin goes like this ... Timbaland is claiming to be creating the world's first mobile album based on the fact that the distribution of said album will only be via phone company Verizon. How ridiculous. Is he recording this album in his studio where he made his other records, or is he going to phone in the vocals on his Verizon phone? Let's just think about that for a second before we go phoning the Guiness Book of Records requesting a mention.
This 'mutton dressed up as lamb' press release is really his way of saying "Verizon are paying me a shit-load of money to release my next album through them exclusively".
That's okay. I'm happy with any act who can come up with an alternate revenue model and that does often mean doing a corporate deal with a multi-national organization.
However, there is absolutely no historical relevance to this deal. It is purely a corporate agreement that will restrict a large percentage of his fanbase from hearing the music. If you don't use Verizon, you don't get the music.
But what's that you say Timbaland? "Every place don't get a CD (but) everybody has a mobile phone." You are kidding us, right? "Every place don't get a CD"? What do you think that little device in your laptop called a D drive is? What does that shiny little metal thing that you watch your DVDs through also do? What is that 5" slot in your car that takes shiny plastic music discs for ... and what about that device that every home has which is quite capable of playing a CD. What's it called again, oh yeah, A CD PLAYER.
"Everybody has a mobile phone," you say Timbaland? Well according to a recent survey from Forrester Research, Verizon only has 26.3% of the mobile market. By my calculations, that appears to me that in the USA, 72.9% of people with mobile phones won't even get the chance to hear Timbaland's new music this year.
That's okay too. The Timbaland Verizon deal is purely a corporate arrangement. But, please Mr. T, please don't try and spin this as some sort of brilliant innovation.
