The Police reunion tour is making its way around the world. This weekend, Melbourne, Australia scored the gig. After all the anticipation, it was hard to leave the venue not feeling a bit empty.
The Police broke up after releasing one excellent album (Outlandos D'Amour), three very good albums (Regatta De Blanc, Zenyetta Mondatta and Synchronicity) and one okay one (Ghost In The Machine) but they finished before their time. They are now remembered mainly for the hits, not the albums. Had they stayed together they may have been The Beatles of the 80s, but they broke up before getting to the masterpiece.
The Police don't have a 'Sgt Pepper', an 'Exile On Main Street', a 'Dark Side of the Moon', a 'Hotel California' or even a 'Pet Sounds' in their catalogue. Their legacy is a great catalogue of radio friendly songs.
This was not a stadium show. It should have been in smaller venues and they should have played more (like The Eagles did). The size of venue was over the top for a band of this calibre.
40,000 fans witnessed The Police at last night's show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The band certainly gave the fans the setlist that they wanted and Sting knew how to play to the crowd. Putting on an Aussie accent for Australia Day, Sting said "We've got 40,000 Australians here and that means 80 hands. Let's put those hands together".
The Melbourne show was on Australia Day, Australia's national holiday. "We don't have an Australia Day in England," he said later. "We have ungrateful day".
So onto the music... you cannot deny that this is a band with a rich catalogue of singles and they pretty much played them all. The only chart single missing was 1982's No. 50 hit 'Spirits In The Material World'.
What was the go with the backing vocals, though? Surely for a show this expensive, The Police could have coughed up for some real backing singers instead of resorting to taped vocals. That wasn't right.
The setlist has been consistent from show to show and the band pretty much stuck to the recorded versions. If there is going to be a new album, they certainly weren't roadtesting any songs (like the Eagles did on Farewell 1).
Maybe they should just level with the fans and call this 'The Retirement Fund World Tour'.
The setlist for Melbourne (and every other show) was:
Message in a Bottle (from Reggatta de Blanc, 1979) (No. 5)
