John Stewart, one time member of the Kingston Trio and best known for the 70's hit 'Gold', has died in San Diego.
Stewart suffered a stroke on Friday and taken to the Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Ironically, Scripps Mercy was also the hospital he was born in.He died early Sunday morning, after not regaining consciousness.
Stewart spent seven years as a member of the Kingston Trio before going solo. He joined the folk group, known for their 50's hit 'Tom Dooley' in 1961.
One of his best-known songs was 'Daydream Believer'. It was a hit for The Monkees and later covered by Ane Murray.
However, 1979's 'Gold' was Stewart's shining light as a solo star. 'Gold' featured co-vocals from Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham. The song went to No. 5 in the USA. The album 'Bombs Away Dream Babies' peaked at No. 10 in America.
Stewart's songs have been recorded by Rosanne Cash, Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Nanci Griffith.
His brother, Mike Stewart was in a group called We Five. Their 1965 hit was 'You Were On My Mind'.
John is survived by his wife Buffy and their four children Mikael, Jeremy, Amy and Luke.
