Peter Garrett, former Midnight Oil singer and now Environment Minister for the Australian government, has announced a plan to eliminate plastic bags from shops by the end of the year.
At a media conference this week, Garrett said "There are some 4 billion of these plastic bags floating around the place, getting into landfill, ending up affecting our wildlife, and showing up on our beaches while we are on holidays. I think most Australians would like to see them rid. We think it's absolutely critical that we get cracking on it. We'd like to see a phase-out implemented by 2008".The Environment Minister pointed out that Australia is behind China in his plan. China announced on Tuesday that plastic bags would be banned from supermarkets from June 1, 2008.
While Garrett is singing the benefits of bagging the bag, plastic still does have some use ... for music.
