Daft Punk have played their first Australian show ever in Melbourne last night to over 10,000 adoring fans.
Despite a strong line-up of Muscles, Cut Copy, The Presets, Sebastian and Kavinsky and Gang Bang DJs, it was clear who the crowd was here to see. It's difficult to write objectively about this show. It was stunning, it was amazing visually and despite the fact that for all we knew the two members of Daft Punk were up there sending text messages to their girlfriends back in France, it sounded great, but it had one hell of a hype to live up to.
When their show debuted earlier this year at California's Coachella festival, people reportedly saw god and vowed they would never be the same. That's something, hey?
I didn't see god last night - far from it, in fact - but I might have, had I not heard anything about the show, or had I gone in with low or no expectations.
The hype didn't seem to bother the crowd though, who lapped up intense live mixes of 'Da Funk', 'Around The World', 'Technologic' and anything else you care to think of.
Again, at loggerheads with the crowd, I have enjoyed performances from Basement Jaxx and the Chemical Brothers far more, but as one punter told me last night "the Chemical Brothers are shit, mate. They don't have a pyramid!"
He was right, they didn't have a pyramid and Daft Punk did, and that's gotta be worth something, doesn't it?
Sure they're legends, sure they have pioneered production techniques and sound like you're taking an acid trip inside an inter-dimensional wormhole, sure their films are mind-bogglingly creative, but this amazing show just didn't live up to the divine qualities it was supposed to have.
