A website is recording what fans are choosing to spend on Radiohead's new album.
The site, dubbed What Price Did You Choose is recording what Radiohead fans think the forthcoming industry-shaking 'In Rainbows' album is worth.Radiohead blindsided the entire music industry in October by offering a digital download of their next album for whatever price the fans deemed fair. They have also offered a deluxe made-to-order version of the album, including double vinyl, outtakes and a slew of artwork for £40.
The online survey should provide some insight into the bold new music retail endeavour, to see whether the free market approach could work for all bands and dispense with the "industry" altogether.
A random sample of comments and prices have been posted on the site. A US buyer noted that "I love the concept of 'tipping' a band, being able to show support in a more intimate way, even for a band as big as Radiohead." A UK buyer quipped "I would never buy one of their albums under normal conditions, so they have made an extra quid!"
Prices range from nothing to an Italian fan paying £20. The standard album price from HMV in the UK is £8.99.
