Experimental composer John Cage will be remembered at Melbourne's Federation Square from October 11 - 27 through a unique display.
The square - a unique landmark in itself - will scroll quotes from John Cage across it's LED ticker panels that litter the square. The quotes will be taken from 'Communication', Part III from 'Composition As Process,' as appears in Silence: Lectures and Writings by John Cage and are provided courtesy of the John Cage Trust at Bard College.
The tribute is presented by Arts Victoria and is fitting for the city known for it's thriving arts scene.
Cage was born in Los Angeles in 1912 and studied music under German born composer Arnold Schoenberg and Henry Cowell.
His composition '4:33' is probably his best known work, which is essentially silence for four minutes and thirty three seconds.
Another piece of his, 'Organ2/ASLSP' (which stands for As Slowly aS Possible) is currently being played in Halberstadt, Germany... as slowly as possible. The current note is due to change on July 5, 2008.
