Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne is looking to premiere the band's foray into filmmaking at next year's South By Southwest music conference in March.
According to the band's website, 'Christmas On Mars' was supposed to be released at the end of 2003. The lead character, Major Syrtis, is played by Lips member Steven Drozd, and the film was written and directed by Coyne. He told Billboard, "It is coming. In fact, it's better than ever. Because it's taken so long, we've become better filmmakers. There's better computer effects. I think it will be much better."
Coyne had previously described the film thusly: "Maybe 'Eraserhead' or 'Dead Man' crossed with some kind of fantasy and space aspects, like 'The Wizard of Oz' and maybe '2001: A Space Odyssey,' except done without real actors or money, and set at Christmas-time."
The American Food and Drug Administration are reportedly investigating whether the film could be classified as a controlled substance.
