Opera great Luciano Pavarotti is unconscious and close to death, an Italian television station reported yesterday.
The E' TV Antenna Uno station reported that family and friends were gathering around the tenor at his home in Modena, Northern Italy. A spokesman said he was "in a very serious condition and receiving supportive treatment", but declined to elaborate.It was suggested that Pavarotti is now suffering from kidney failure. He has been battling pancreatic cancer since having a tumour removed in July last year, and last month spent more than two weeks in the cancer ward of a Modena hospital.
Italy's AGI news agency reported that cancer specialists from the hospital were treating the 71-year-old at his home.
