Manchester has farewelled Tony Wilson, the man who came to personify the city's rich musical heritage.
A private funeral was held at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church in the city centre on Monday. It was described by actor Richard Madeley - who worked with Wilson at Granada Television - as an "intensely moving service".Wilson died of a heart attack on August 10, after a long battle with kidney cancer. Factory Records luminaries Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order) and Shaun Ryder (Happy Mondays) were among the 200 mourners.
Wilson's coffin, jet black with silver handles, entered the church accompanied by The Durutti's Column's 'Sketch For Summer'. It left to the strains of Happy Mondays' 'Bob's Yer Uncle', before being met by rapturous applause as the funeral procession made its way from the church.
The BBC reports of plans for a public service commemorating the man known as Mr Manchester, as well as a permanent memorial.
