The Los Angeles Police Department has set six veteran homicide officers the task of investigating the unsolved murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G.
Notorious - real name Christopher Wallace - was gunned down in his car on March 9, 1997 after leaving an industry party in Los Angeles. Witnesses reported that the car involved in the drive-by shooting was a dark Chevrolet Impala.Theories abound as to who committed the murder, with alleged suspects ranging from rogue police officers to members of the Compton gang Southside Crips. Wallace's death has also been suggested to be a retaliation to the murder a year earlier of Tupac Shakur.
The new probe comes in the wake of allegations by Wallace's mother, Voletta Wallace, that LA police officers played a role in her son's death. Voletta Wallace's wrongful death lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles ended in mistrial after a judge ruled in July 2005 that a detective had deliberately hidden information supplied by an informant alleging police involvement in the murder.
