Stars young and old - actually, mainly old - came together at Wembley Stadium yesterday to pay tribute to the late Diana, Princess Of Wales.
With a nervous UK on maximum terror alert after a spate of car-bomb plots, the event went ahead without incident, though Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie's microphone failed during her rendition of 'Glamorous'. Some might argue that this represents another averted act of terror.Pharrell Williams told the crowd, "in spite of all the crazy things that have been happening I want to see everyone stand up for peace," whilst P Diddy performed a surprisingly emotional rendition of 'I'll Be Missing You', which heavily samples The Police's hit 'Every Breath You Take'. He also showed gratitude toward Diana's sons, shouting, "Prince William, Prince Harry we love and respect you."
Lily Allen provided some much-needed youthful exuberance among an ageing crop of artists, which included Elton John, Tom Jones, Duran Duran, Status Quo and Bryan Ferry.
Prince William seemed to enjoy Nelly Furtado's set, with the future king seen dancing, poorly, during her rendition of 'Maneater', whilst Tom Jones proved that his on-stage energy remains as infectious as ever.
Elton John opened and closed the concert, in front of nearly 70,000 people, which according to Prince William was "about all that our mother loved in life - her music, her dance, her charities and her family and friends." The concert was broadcast to an estimated 500 million people across 140 countries.
