Ok, so National Slam Day is just around the corner. What this means for "Live Music" loving punters is that you have the opportunity to show your support for live Australian music by attending one of over 100 live music events across the nation.
In an unprecedented show of support more than 100 music venues around Oz will celebrate National Slam Day. S.L.A.M is the acronym for Save Live Australian Music. Lovers of live music, bands and punters had a tough time of it a few years a go when the Melbourne Parliment introduced liquor licensing laws that saw the closure of a number of live venues due to the fact that they could not afford to keep two bouncers on the door whilst hosting live music.
The punters, musicians and venues had enough and as a result on the 23rd of February 2010, 20,000 people marched down Swanston St in Melbourne in a protest, that has become known as the greatest cultural protest in Australian history.
Music fans will create history again on February 23rd 2012, as it will be the first time so many venues have simultaneously supported a single cause.
Small venues are part of our cultural fabric. All Australian acts, from AC/DC to Men at Work, Cold Chisel, the Divinyls, Kylie Minogie, Cut Copy and Temper Trap, started out in small venues. As Paul Kelly said at the 2010 SLAM Rally: “You don’t learn how to write a song at school, you don’t do a Tafe course on how to play in front of an audience, small venues were my university.’’
