In a recent interview with the U.K. edition of the Big Issue (magazine for the homeless), McCartney said "You know, there were only four people in The Beatles, and I was one of them. That means that only three people in the universe experienced that, which is pretty amazing. Even Bob Dylan can't say that, Robert De Niro can't say that; it doesn't matter how great they are... they weren't in the Beatles."
The cocky Beatle might not have been so cocky a few years ago, when he released his rather dull 'Chaos and Creation in the Backyard', but given the praise he received for his classical album 'Ecce Cor Meum' and his latest album, 'Memory Almost Gone', actually being the kind of record you would expect from someone once heralded as a genius, we'll let him slide this time.But for the record, Paul McCartney can never say he wrote 'Hurricane' or 'Knocking On Heavens Door' either... or act.
In other Macca (ish) news, it was 40 years ago today, when a recording of Sgt. Peppers' telling of "the" band to play was released.
The album, at the time, set a new standard for what an album should be, playing magnificently from start to finish with classic songs 'Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band', 'With A Little Help From My Friends', 'When I'm Sixty-Four', and 'A Day In The Life'.
The album was recorded on a four track, which Sir George Martin somehow used to create the finished product (no digital mastering, no nothing - recorded on a tape machine few people could make a decent sounding demo on).
Although many people refer to Sgt. Peppers as a concept album, there is no real continuing theme, other than the reprise of the title track.
Now all we have to do is wait for top quality remastered versions of every album. Get to it EMI!
