Last week, The Knack frontman Doug Fieger spoke with Undercover and talked about the passing of drumming Bruce Gary.
"Last year, original drummer Bruce Gary died of cancer. "Nobody knew he was sick," Doug told Undercover News in an exclusive interview for the Countdown Spectacular 2 shows. "He didn't tell anybody. Nobody, including his mother, knew he was sick. He took the opposite approach to when I was sick and avoided it. He didn't have to die. His cancer was treatable".Felice Gary saw the story and contacted Undercover to tell the family side of the story. "This is patently untrue, and it is disturbing that Doug Fieger is now saying this, not only to you but also to Courier Mail," she says "I don't understand why he feels he has to speak of Bruce at all - they were certainly not friends".
"Bruce Gary was my brother, and many people knew he was ill for quite a long time. His mother certainly knew, as she was paying for his treatment. He died broke, in debt, and had no medical insurance. He received no royalties from The Knack. He was receiving treatment for Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, but the truth is that the cancer was so widespread in his lymphatic system that there was no cure and his death was inevitable".
"Not that it matters, because Bruce is now dead. But I feel that the record should be corrected and the truth told. Fieger has his own agenda, and it doesn't seem to include the truth".
Bruce Gary was a founding member of The Knack. He originally left the band with the other founding members when the group disbanded after their third album 'Round Trip'.
He rejoined the group for a short period in the 90s and was present in the line-up for the 'Zoom' album.
Bruce Gary died last year from cancer. He was 55.
