Silverchair's domination of the number one position on Australia for the 'Young Modern' album made us curious what Daniel Johns was thinking when he was much more younger and modern.
The answer lies in the December 1994 edition of Rolling Stone. Silverchair had just had their first hit single with 'Tomorrow' and Daniel's quote at the time is gleaming."It's happenin' heaps quick," he told Rolling Stone when 'Tomorrow' hit number one on the Australian chart ."We're, like, semi-spewin' about people thinkin' we're, gonna be one-hit wonders and all that shit. But we're not gonna be."
While the quote sounded exactly like the answer you would expect from the teenager he was at the time, it was accurate. Silverchair were not one-hit wonders and now more than 12 years later, they are one of the few acts who can sell CDs and concert tickets in Australia.
'Young Modern' has spent 4 weeks at number one in Australia and generated over-the counter sales of nearly 70,000 units in the first four weeks.
This week, they will pass the 70,000 sales threshold and truly deserve the premature awarding of their platinum award. (ARIA has awarded the title double platinum for sales shipped to stores, not sold to the fans).
Silverchair are in the final stages of their Australian tour. Some UK and European dates have been announced and a US release is imminent.
They play Fremantle, Western Australia this weekend, Sydney next week and hit the UK on August 10th.
