Sir Paul McCartney, in his old age, has turned to classical music (a number of times, actually), last year releasing 'Ecce Cor Meum' (Behold My Heart).
This year, at the Classical Brit awards, McCartney's foray into highbrow entertainment was rewarded with Album of the Year. The album, which has received mixed reviews (not so mixed from the purists - who hated it), was recorded with The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields.
"It's such a huge honour for me to get this. If you'd told me as a kid in Liverpool that I would be at the Royal Albert Hall picking up an award I would not have believed you. How proud would my mum and dad have been if they had known this could happen?"
McCartney wasn't the only former pop star up for the award. Former (and now at the helm again) Police front man and all round loon Sting recently ventured into classical music, releasing an album of 16th century lute music.
A number of older artists have turned to classical styles of music, including Roger Waters and even former Deep Purple and Rainbow guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (who also dabbled in the lute-arts).
