An odd selection of artists have joined forces to pay tribute to The Material/Maternal Girl.
'Through The Wilderness' is a mostly freaky psych-folk tribute album to Madonna, led by the faerie prince himself Devendra Banhart. Other artists to contribute their loopy take of the pop icons hits include Bat For Lashes, The Tyde, Giant Drag, Ariel Pink and plenty more. The songs featured cover Madge's entire career, from 'Lucky Star' and 'Borderline' all the way up to 'Hung Up' and 'Beautiful Stranger'. Also included is a special mega-mix by Doctor Awesome, better known as Gabe Serbian from avant garde noise loonies The Locust.
Pitchfork reports that the album will be released on Manimal Vinyl on September 4 and a quarter of the proceeds will be donated to a charity organisation put together by Madonna herself, Raising Malawi, which supports HIV/AIDS orphans in the impoverished South-Western African nation.
Pitchfork also announced that special release parties will take place in LA and New York to launch the album, featuring many of the contributors on the compilation as well as a "special guest".
