A gap in last weekend's Splendour In The Grass Festival line-up delivered The Vines to unsuspecting punters.
After quirky New York act Clap Your Hands Say Yeah were forced to cancel their Australian shows, Brisbane comedy rap-rock troupe Butterfingers stepped in to fill their Splendour In The Grass position. But there was still a tantalising gap in the line-up, delineated by question marks. The Vines had played a secret gig in Sydney the preceding week and punters' suspicions were confirmed when Craig Nicholls and band strode onstage after UK indie rock band the Zutons. Although crowd interaction reportedly didn't go much past 'thanks' and 'all right' according to a review in The Australian, reports of the performance have been overwhelmingly positive.
The band released what can safely be dubbed their comeback album 'Vision Valley' in April 2006 after their explosive debut 'Highly Evolved' was followed by the critically and commercially disappointing 'Winning Days'. They had avoided playing live since the release of the album, but after their Splendour set, word is that the band is firing once again.
