The integration of music players with mobile phone technology has coincided with a 16% increase in phone sales in Sweden.
Sweden, the home of telecommunications giant Ericsson, is seen as a solid indicator of worldwide phone-technology trends, due to the high penetration of mobile phones in the region. In the second quarter, around 60% of new phone purchases were equipped with music players, according to market research company GFK.At the same time last year, music-equipped phones accounted for closer to 30% of all new phone purchases.
Allen Pedersen, Telecom Analyst at GFK, told a Swedish newspaper, "the Music Cell Phones have been selling really, really well. These new models are the main reason sales are up and I believe that music phones will eventually replace the mp3-player".
