The release of their fifth studio album, ‘Steal The Light’, will be out on Friday 10 May.
The band’s first fully independent global release started life when vocalist Felix Riebl was in Athens, Greece in 2011. Then following a tour of the USA, Felix fulfilled a life-long dream and attended the New Orleans Jazz Festival ideas for their latest album were beginning to take shape.
Always changing, always exploring the boundaries of their changeable and indefinite characteristics, The Cat Empire has put rhythm firmly to the fore. Melbourne’s genre-crossers harness a feeling of striking pandemonium, archaic traditions and vibrant affect, all laid over enchanting beats.
“What started as a planned week turned into 2 months. I was captivated by the mystery of the city, its extraordinary history, it’s Caribbean colours and European architecture, it’s relentless and deep music,” says Felix.
‘Steal The Light’, comes after playing together for over ten years, the six-piece take in many inspirations to create a sound that excels musical styles by their spontaneous oomphiness.
“In many ways this record is a return to our original aesthetic, a very simple thing; that the music is for dancing and feeling good; and that the beat of the record belongs to all nations,” says trumpet player, Harry Angus.
The Cat Empire’s four shows at Sydney’s Metro Theatre sold-out and they’ll soon be making their way to Melbourne for more sold-out shows, followed by the Sunday night headline spot on East Coast Bluesfest on Sunday 31 March. To say they’re popular would be an understatement.
The album will be released by Two Shoes Records through Inertia.
