Production company 3ality Digital has previewed a new U2 concert film shot entirely in 3D.
Variety reports that the company previewed a teaser trailer and a clip of the band performing 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' at the ShoWest Convention in Las Vegas. The film, cryptically dubbed 'U2 3D', features performances from the band's South American tour and comprises 14 or 15 songs over 80 minutes. They claim that it is the first live-action film shot, posted and exhibited in 3D.Producer Jon Shapiro of 3ality told Variety that the Irish rock superstars were the perfect subject for the cutting edge technology because "there's a connectivity at a U2 concert you can't describe unless you've been there." The film was directed by longtime U2 collaborators Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington.
'U2 3D' is slated to play exclusively in 3D-capable digital theatres, like the IMAX cinemas. The film is currently searching for a distributor, and is mooted for a cinematic release toward the end of 2007. Although Variety reported that some who viewed the film were concerned that cinemas won't be able to accurately recreate the quality of sound and picture achieved.
