In an open letter to The Los Angeles Times last week, Mike Love defended his right to call himself "The Beach Boys." Brian Wilson has since repsonded and makes more sense than ever.
As previosuly reported Mike Love plans to take himself out on the road and call himself "The Beach Boys" without including other originals Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks. Whatever his open letter says, it's still the wrong thing to do. He is not The Beach Boys.
Click here to read Mike Loves side of the story that talks about love, family and how The Beach Boys are bigger than the band members and that in the same way summer never ends, neither do the The Beach Boys. (Good grief I'm about to drop my cookies, please make it stop..)
Mike Love has not done himself any favours with his completely and sadly transparent attempt to justify making money out of The Beach Boys name without including the other Beach Boys band members in the touring project.
Brian Wilson has since responded to Loves letter with the following commentary " As far as I know I can't be fired--that wouldn't be cool. The negativity surrounding all the comments bummed me out. What's confusing is that by Mike not wanting or letting Al, David and me tour with the band, it sort of feels like we're being fired.
What's a bummer to Al and me is that we have numerous offers to continue, so why wouldn't we want to? We all poured our hearts and souls into that album and the fans rewarded us by giving us a No. 3 debut on the Billboard charts, and selling out our shows. We were all blown away by the response.
Al and I would like to be included in the continuous promotion of "That's Why God Made The Radio." That's what I've been doing for over a decade: making records and going out and supporting them. It's what I do. Capitol Records has been so cool to us this year in terms of supporting the 50th and I personally want to say thanks."
