Wave-riding legend Kelly Slater duets with Australian coastal roots act The Beautiful Girls.
Slater is in Australia tearing up the surf in the Quiksilver Pro at Duranbah Beach on Queensland's Gold Coast alongside 44 of the world's best boardriders. Accompanying the surfing was The Pro Show, a live music event featuring The Beautiful Girls, conscious eight piece hip-hop outfit The Herd, rootsy blues rambler Ash Grunwald, plus locals The Winnie Coopers, Rogerthat, Beau Young and Band Of Frequencies.Slater took it upon himself to join headliners The Beautiful Girls as they performed in front of 3000 dude and dudettes. With Slater on ukelele, the band played a Hawaiian flavoured version of Paul Simon's 'Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes'. Slater then took lead vocals on an Eddie Vedder tune before watching the rest of the set from side of stage.
After the set, the chuffed group and their new celebrity fan/band member signed autographs and posed for photos with less-famous fans.
The Pro Show was a hit and sold out before the band hit the stage, boding well for a repeat performance when the circuit returns to the Gold Coast in 2008.
