As reported previously on Undercover, Andre 3000 of Outkast fame is to play the role of Jimi Hendrix in a film biopic of the guitarists life from the time he was discovered by Keith Richard’s girlfriend in a club in N.Y, through to the recording of debut album Are You Experienced.
Production hit a road block early on when trustees for The Hendrix Estate, refused to allow any of Hendrix' original music to be used in the film without their participation. Experience Hendrix, LLC made the following statement. "The family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalog has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation."
A couple of months down the track and it looks as though an agreement could not be me met by both parties. Thereby, Andre 3000 has recorded new versions of covers performed by Hendrix between 1966 and 1967. Covers include The Beatles’ "Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band", The Troggs' "Wild Thing", Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog", Muddy Waters' "Mannish Boy" and Elmore James' "Bleeding Heart".
