Legendary jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis gets political about his new album.
Marsalis' new album is provocatively titled 'From the Plantation to the Penitentiary' and he spoke to 'This Week' on America's ABC, urging community involvement in politics. He said, "Find out where the tax money is going. Find out why something happened. Write to people. Just be a participant."He also said that new song 'Where Y'all At' asks what the boomer generation has passed on to their children. "We always want to blame a younger generation. What are we giving the younger generation?" he queried.
The song features the lines "You thug life coons / You modern day minstrels with your songless tunes." He spoke to San Diego's Union Tribune, saying he hates modern hip hop, calling it " some BS that is reductive for black people."
He also rejected the violence and misogyny of modern rap, saying, "The pathology of somebody getting shot is not entertainment to me. Somebody swiping a credit card in a woman's bottom in a music-video is not entertaining. If you want to insult people, it's not entertaining."
