From 1973 to 1981 Zolar X were somewhat legendary amongst music fans on the west coast of the USA for dressing and acting like creatures from space 24/7. Not only that. They rocked.
Zolar X have been referred to as L.A's first glam rock band and played with the likes of Iggy Pop, The New York Dolls and Van Halen. They count Jello Biafra as a long time fan and it wasn't until Biafra re-released " Timeless" (a collection of demos, originally released in 1982 on Pyramid Records) in 2004 on his Alternative Tentacles label that the band ignited the curiosity of the world press. It was a far cry from being the misunderstood space age act of the 70's and 80's who felt at home in a few places, one of those being Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco. Throughout the years Zolar X recorded five times and hit a bunch of brick walls (many great bands that should for all intent and purpose succeed, do not, there's thousdands of them). As per the bio on their website "They saw the death of Glam/Glitter, witnessed the assault of Disco and the rise of Punk. In 1981 after realizing the music industry was not going to let them inside to shake up the status quo the members of ZOLAR X went their separate ways."
Fast forward to the naughties and inspired by the re release of Timeless, Zolar X reformed for a tour in order to give a new generation of punters an opportunity to experience some genuine space rock n roll. The band traversed the west coast from Canada to San Diego, played SXSW and toured throughout the Midwest between 2005-2006.
X Marks the Spot (Alternative Tentacles) and ZAP! You're Zolarized (Deliar Spacer Core) were released in 2007. Following the release of these two albums Zolar X have since released " Life Signs From The Stars" in March 2012. After nearly 40 years in and out of the business it's good to know they are still writing and recording. Who knows, they might finally crack the code for universal success one day soon. If they haven't already? Maybe the people of planet Earth are the ones lagging behind the rest of the Universe in their sluggishness to recognise Zolar X as the legends they are?
